Surface Mounted Weighbridge
An above-ground electronic truck scale with approach ramps and no pit to excavate — ideal for hilly, rocky, or flood-prone sites and quick to install and maintain.
Capacity: 5 MT to 100 MT (configurable)
Surface mounted weighbridge — built for India’s toughest sites
A surface mounted weighbridge (also called a pitless weighbridge) is an electronic truck scale installed above ground on a raised foundation, with approach ramps at either end. Because there is no pit to excavate, it is faster and cheaper to install than a pit type design and avoids the drainage and water-logging problems that pits can suffer in Indian conditions.
As a manufacturer since 2001, Caliber Scales builds surface mounted weighbridges from 5 MT to 100 MT, engineered for accurate, reliable weighing under continuous heavy traffic.
Why choose a surface mounted design
- No excavation. A raised foundation replaces a deep pit, cutting civil cost and lead time and getting your weighbridge operational sooner.
- No water-logging. With the deck and load cells above ground, a surface mounted weighbridge eliminates the standing-water problems that can affect pits — ideal for flood-prone and high-groundwater sites.
- Easy maintenance. The open structure underneath gives technicians clear access to load cells and wiring for inspection and service.
- Versatile siting. Hilly, rocky, or uneven ground that makes a pit impractical is rarely a problem for a surface mounted weighbridge.
How it works
Vehicles drive up the ramps onto a robust steel deck supported by load cells. Each load cell converts the weight it carries into an electrical signal; the combined signal is processed by a pre-calibrated digital indicator and shown on an LED, GLCD, or TFT display. The reading can be printed, stored, and fed into your records or weighing software.
Instrumentation and options
Every Caliber weighbridge can be configured with the instrumentation your operation needs:
- Pre-calibrated indicators with intelligent terminals
- Connectivity over RS232, RS485, Ethernet, and USB
- IP cameras for photo capture of each weighment
- Vehicle-positioning guidance
- Weighbridge software for ticketing and reporting
- Lightning-protection systems for exposed sites
Applications
Surface mounted weighbridges are a popular choice for logistics and transport yards, cement and aggregate plants, mining and quarrying, and any site where drainage, groundwater, or terrain rules out a pit. They are equally at home in warehousing and manufacturing despatch.

- Relocatable more easily than a pit installation
Comparison
How the two most common weighbridge designs compare at a glance.
| Surface mounted | Pit type | |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Above ground on ramps — no excavation | Set flush into an excavated pit |
| Civil work | Lower — raised foundation only | Higher — pit excavation + drainage |
| Yard space | Needs approach ramps | Saves space; level approach from any side |
| Maintenance access | Open underside — easy to clean & service | Access within the pit |
| Drainage / groundwater | Well suited to high-water sites | Needs good drainage design |
| Typical lead time | Faster to install | Longer (civil work) |
Frequently asked questions
What is a surface mounted weighbridge?
A surface mounted weighbridge — also known as a pitless weighbridge — sits above ground on a raised foundation with approach ramps, so there is no pit to excavate. It is quick to install, easy to clean and maintain, and avoids the water-logging problems a pit can have.
What capacity does a surface mounted weighbridge come in?
Caliber surface mounted (pitless) weighbridges are available from 5 MT to 100 MT. The right capacity depends on your heaviest fully loaded vehicles plus a safety margin — tell us your vehicle types and we will size it for you.
Is a surface mounted weighbridge better for flood-prone or hilly areas?
Yes. Because the structure is above ground, a surface mounted weighbridge avoids water-logging and is well suited to flood-prone, hilly, or rocky locations where excavating a pit is difficult.
